The artist Nils Amadeus Lange uses performative methods to observe existing works of art from new perspectives and to make them accessible. This approach allows him to analyze complex reference systems, to examine them for their contemporary character and, in a certain way, to queer them. As part of the exhibition Accumulation, Nils Amadeus Lange's new work Der Umbau (The Conversion) approaches the work Homes from Homes II (2000-2001) by the artist group Art & Language from the collection of the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst. The conceptual installation consists of reworked versions of earlier works by the artist group as well as other works from the collection. Variations in size, colour, technique and text fragments create copies and parodies that reflect the relationship between original and reproduction and the mechanisms of the art world. Instead of a further analytical examination of Homes from Homes II, Nils Amadeus Lange is interested in an emotional entry point. Complex discourses are to be negotiated not only theoretically, but also through direct, emotional and physical experiences. Der Umbau adds a new dimension to the existing Art & Language installation and enters into a new dialog with the museum's collection.
Nils Amadeus Lange (* 1989 Cologne, Germany) works as an artist, performer and lecturer in Zurich. After studying theater at the Bern University of the Arts, he expanded his practice to include various media, with a focus on dance and performance, and developed numerous international projects. At the center of his practice stands the body as a means of deconstructing social conventions and gender stereotypes. He has been teaching and developing curricula at various universities in the fields of fashion, acting, visual arts, photography and performance for six years. In curriculum development, he focuses on the realization of alternative forms of learning and experimental approaches.
