This long-durational performance explores the mythology of a woman‑calculator who anticipates the future – a figure known as “Destinée l’estimée,” Destiny the Estimated. Monika Emmanuelle Kazi examines cultural relationships to divination, particularly in Central Africa, and the magical power of foresight in order to question notions such as long‑term projection and establishment in a world where stories are vanishing in favour of capital profit. The scenographic environment displays the passing of time through stardust‑like falling sand and water marbles swelling in glasses. Dressed in her Sunday best, the artist plays the board game Ngola against herself. Subtle as the inaudible sound of meteors in the sky or roots growing under the earth, her gestures are acoustically amplified in a scene between fantasy and reality, everyday life and tragedy, archetype and myth.
Monika Emmanuelle Kazi lives and works in Geneva. Her artistic practice investigates the traces left by the body in the domestic sphere. Her diasporic identity serves as a starting point for a multi-layered practice that includes writing, installation, performance and video. She explores the intimacies of home and the construction of territories and cultural heritage. By interweaving personal and collective experiences, Kazi reflects on the emotional charge of everyday objects as well as gestures, materials and habitat as evidence of changing histories.
